On 23 January 2025, the National Sustainable Procurement Roundtable (NSPR) held its first in-person Members-Only Meeting since the pandemic, bringing together 35 attendees from 13 corporate members. The session featured discussions on the challenges and strategies of sustainable procurement, with insights from representatives of Changi Airport Group, Singtel, Mandai, DBS, Frasers Property and Singapore Polytechnic.

Addressing Scope 3 Emissions: Speakers examined the complexities of Scope 3 emissions and strategies for regulatory compliance. Emphasis was placed on the importance of stakeholder engagement in driving effective reductions and ensuring accurate reporting. The need to prioritise product carbon footprints over company-specific and industry-average emission factors, with inflation adjustments for greater accuracy, was also highlighted.
Key takeaway: Implementing robust methodologies for measuring and reporting Scope 3 emissions, alongside supplier collaboration, is essential to achieving sustainability goals.
Greening the Supply Chain: Discussions focused on available support for companies to enhance their sustainability efforts. Supplier sustainability support programmes offer grants for workshops, advisory services, and tools to help SMEs align with sustainability goals, thereby improving their financing opportunities and attracting investors. Speakers also highlighted the potential of linking corporate sustainability targets with supplier incentives through supply chain financing, a mechanism that can drive improvements in environmental, health, safety, and social standards.
Key takeaway: Aligning sustainability goals with commercial incentives enables both companies and suppliers to drive improvements across the supply chain and unlock financial opportunities.
Embedding Sustainability in Supply Chain Management: Best practices for integrating sustainability into supply chains were shared, including the use of supplier e-learning programmes to strengthen sustainability practices. Training programmes on sustainable practices, such as reporting and carbon management, were highlighted. Industry collaborations with Institutes of Higher Learning (IHL) were also discussed, showcasing how such partnerships can drive sustainable outcomes.
Key takeaway: Education, clear procurement guidelines and collaborations are crucial for embedding sustainability across supply chains.

The meeting concluded with a networking session, encouraging connections and potential collaborations among members.

reXtore joins NSPR

Overview: reXtore, pronounced “re-store,” is a Singapore-based studio dedicated to creating ‘Zero Waste’ environments, exhibition booths and furniture. They are recognized as being at the forefront of sustainable innovation, currently specializing in the exhibition and events industry, one of Singapore’s most wasteful sectors.

Mission: reXtore is committed to radically reimagining the MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) industry in Singapore. Their approach focuses on adopting circular design principles, designing out waste, specifying sustainable materials, and minimizing the carbon footprint for exhibition stands of all types.

Innovative Solutions: To achieve this, reXtore develops a range of modular, reusable exhibition stand products tailored for the exhibition and events sector. These innovations help radically reduce waste and promote sustainable practices. The company is currently collaborating closely with the Singapore Tourism Board and SACEOS (Singapore Association of Convention and Exhibition Organisers and Suppliers) to identify solutions and rapidly drive the industry towards a zero waste, low carbon future.

Highlights from the SG Sustainable Procurement Forum 2024

A big thank you to everyone who joined us at the SG Sustainable Procurement Forum 2024, hosted by the National Sustainable Procurement Roundtable (NSPR).

The fourth edition of our virtual forum saw 279 professionals from various sectors within the procurement industry. Apart from Singapore, this event also saw participants from Australia, Cambodia, China, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand, Switzerland, and USA. Together, we delved into crucial discussions inspired by the outcomes of the 2023 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28).

Some of the topics discussed include:

Overcoming Barriers to Sustainable Supply Chain Finance: Unravelling the complexities of finance in the supply chain, we identified key strategies to overcome barriers and drive sustainable practices forward.
Sustainability: A Key Pre-requisite of Supply Resilience: We explored how sustainability serves as a cornerstone for building resilient supply chains, ensuring continuity in the face of disruptions.
Charting Singapore’s Energy Transition: Delving into Singapore’s journey towards a sustainable energy future, we uncovered innovative approaches and opportunities for progress.
Empowering Sustainability for SMEs: Recognizing the vital role SMEs play in the procurement ecosystem, we discussed practical solutions to empower them on their sustainability journey.
Sustainability Initiatives for Enterprises: From best practices to innovative initiatives, we showcased a myriad of sustainability efforts undertaken by enterprises globally, inspiring collective action.

During the forum, we also unveiled the eBook, ‘A Supplier’s Guide to Sustainability’. This collaborative effort by NSPR members is now available as a free resource, designed to equip suppliers with the tools and guidance needed to embark on their sustainability journey.

As we reflect on the engaging discussions and collaborative spirit of the forum, we’re reminded of the collective power we hold to drive positive change. Having embarked on its sustainability journey more than two decades ago, the University recognises the interdisciplinary nature of sustainability, climate change education and research. NUS continues to deepen its research capabilities and forge collaborations and synergies – both locally and globally – to generate sustainable solutions for economic and social development as well as environmental protection. Most recently, NUS has also introduced a Sustainable Procurement Framework which aligns its procurement practices with sustainable and ethical principles, thereby encouraging a more environmentally conscious decision-making process across the University.

For its efforts in championing sustainability, the University has been recognised with several accolades over the years, including the President’s Award for the Environment (Educational Institution) in 2023, the BCA Green Mark Platinum Champion Award in 2021, the International Living Future Institute Zero Energy Certification in 2020, several NParks Landscape Excellence Assessment Framework Certifications as well as the ASEAN Energy Awards from 2020 to 2022. NUS is home to Singapore’s first building cluster targeting net-zero energy which comprises SDE4 – the first purpose built Net Zero Energy building in Southeast Asia – and two adaptive reuse buildings, SDE1 and SDE3.
